Most of us know that Marvel has their movies lined up for the next 50 years. Ok, that may be an exaggeration, but sometimes it feels like it. With the success of their Marvel Universe on the big screen the studio has been ruling San Diego Comic Con this year. Most of the cast was on hand Day 3 for the panel, including newcomer characters Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ultron, and Thanos. But before these actors will be burned into our brains as these super heroes and villains, I thought we’d take a walk down memory lane and remember what they’ve done B.M. (before Marvel).
Aaron Taylor-Johnson – Quicksilver
Aaron has rapidly been making his mark in the comics turned movie genre. Most people will recognize him as teen vigilante Kick-Ass, but I first saw this young actor in the little known short lived British tv show, Nearly Famous. He played the misunderstood musician, Owen Stephens, in a dramatic show about gifted teens attending a performing arts school. Unfortunately, the show only ran 6 episodes before it was cancelled.
Elizabeth Olsen – Scarlet Witch
Elizabeth is a relatively new actress having only recently gotten credited roles, but her family is very well known. She’s the younger sister of twins, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen. Avengers 2 will most likely be the role that launches her career and creates that separation from her sisters where she’ll forever be known as Scarlet Witch. Buuuuut, since the movie isn’t out yet, we’ll have to settle for a Full House flashback. Sorry!
James Spader – Ultron
Ok, so I have a weakness for 80s teen flicks. John Hughes was the king of the genre. James was in Pretty in Pink as Blane’s preppy friend Steff. Since I’m on the topic of Pretty in Pink, I think Andie should’ve ended up with Duckie. Blane acted like a complete jackass and should’ve stood up to Steff. I has feelings about this and that’s all I’m going to say on that.
Paul Bettany – Vision (also voice of JARVIS)
My first sighting of Paul was in A Knight’s Tale as Geoffrey Chaucer, the sharp-tongued writer with a gambling addiction. I loved this movie. I mean LOVED it. And it was largely because of the amazing cast involved. Aside from Paul there was also Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), and Rufus Swell (Pillars of the Earth). And I don’t care what anyone else thinks, I liked the classic rock music mixed with the medieval setting.
Josh Brolin – Thanos
I may have saved the best for last. Josh is forever to me Mikey’s big brother, Brand from Goonies. Goonies is hands down my favourite childhood movie. Period. And I have very mixed feelings about the speculations (that have been swirling around for years) of a sequel being made. On the one hand I’d love to see the cast get together again. The DVD commentary of them all together was just awesome. On the other hand my brain is saying, “Don’t mess with Goonies! It’s perfect the way it is!” That and I don’t think having kids say words like “shit” nowadays is gonna fly…
And there you have it! The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is set for release next year May 1, 2015!
Update: D’oh! Forgot to include a cast photo and fixed release date to the one that’s been printed on the new posters.
