It’s time for the 2014 Winter Olympics! I thought I’d put together two things that I love. The Winter Games and gifs/pictures! I’m going to try to do more posts as the games go on, but it may be difficult. Unfortunately for me the games fall right smack in the middle of my midterms… Sucks. On the bright side, I’ll have free time just in time for the gold medal hockey games! Gotta look for that silver lining.
(Warning: LOTS of pictures)
Ok, let’s just get this one out of the way…
Yes, there was a malfunction. Yes, it was kind of a big one. Yes, it has spawned all kids of jokes about Russia’s anti-gay laws. But I still felt bad when I saw it because you know there was someone there freaking the fuck out. Poor lil snowflake…
But before all that there was a pre-show going on.
One of the highlights of the opening ceremonies was before they even started IMO. Here’s The Ministry of Internal Affairs choir singing Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” It was pretty awesome. They have a video up that’s been making the internet rounds with almost 4 million views right now!
t.A.T.u performed as well! Which is surprising considering one of the reasons they became so huge was because of their controversial music video “All the Things She Said” which depicted them as a lesbian couple. Actually, their songs were used quite a lot throughout the ceremonies. When the Russian team walked out it was to a remixed version of “Not Gonna Get Us” mashed up with “We Will Rock You” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” Needless to say, I WANT THAT SONG!
And here I present to you the opening ceremonies in pictures so you don’t have to sit through all 3 HOURS of it.
Russian alphabet with symbols of Russian culture and history. I honestly wasn’t paying much attention. I should’ve been because there’s a pop quiz later…
The little girl that will guide us through the ceremonies. A little creepy. I think it’s the makeup.
Floating islands. Ok, I thought these were images on the floor, but they were actually flying by. A bit trippy.
This was really cool. The map changed to the country that was being introduced. The teams then came out from underneath the floor! They came out according to the Russian alphabet. See? I should’ve been paying attention at the start. So, I have no idea which order they came out in, so the next images are randomly placed.
I’m Canadian, so uh, here’s all the Canadians. I might be biased, but I think they were one of the best dressed teams in their Hudson’s Bay peacoats. Go Canada!
Germany in their colourful outfits, but claim they’re not symbolic in any way. Not really liking the duffle coats. I like the women’s hats though. They’ve got cute flowers on them.
France looking chic in Lacoste.
Republic of Korea where the 2018 Winter Games will be held. I can’t wait for those opening ceremonies!
Italy looking stylish in Armani.
Zdeno Chara leading the charge for Slovakia. Wait, doesn’t Boston have a game Saturday night?
U.S. looking patriotic in Tommy Hilfiger. Not really digging the Christmas sweater look. Kinda tacky…
“Jamaica we have a bobsled team!” Interestingly that they crowd sourced money online to get funds to go to Sochi.
And last but not least, the home team, Russia.
Official mascots of the Sochi Olympics. They’re invoking some Teddy Ruxpin dolls there. I’m going to have nightmares tonight…
Pretty horses with a wheel of the sun thing.
Russian dancers! I totally sang the Tetris song while watching this.
99 red balloons go– oh, wait, wrong country.
Russian military with invisible guns.
If you read War & Peace then you’d know exactly what’s going on here. If not… well, just enjoy the ballet dancing.
Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake with ‘doves’ except they looked more like jellyfish.
Sport Gods constellation rave!
Tretiak (famous Russian goalie) & Rodninna (famous Russian figure skater) light the Olympic cauldron. BTW it was like the longest run from the stadium to the cauldron ever.
And this concludes the opening ceremonies! Let the
hunger games begin!
